mermaid shenanigans au

[This is stupid this is stupid this is stupid.

That's the mantra running through Euri's head as the western ocean comes into sight. This is stupid and dangerous and a plant isn't worth the trouble of getting this close to so much water, even if the tide is out.

... But damnit! If those rumours are true all she has to do is grab one or two plants. Then she can take them home and grow them herself and given how they're rare to the point of mythical she'll be rich.

Euri makes her way down the hill, swallowing thickly as the full ocean comes into view. It's a lot bigger than she imagined, and she tries to focus on the shallows directly in front of her. All she has to do is wade out to that little island - only a few miles - and then she'll be fine.

It takes her about an extra ten minutes to reach the edge of the water, and when she does she holds her breath for a few moments. But nothing happen, so she removes her shoes and stockings and ties the hem of her dress up high so it won't get wet. The feeling of warm water hitting her toes makes her squeak, but a few seconds later she's plowing into it and starting for the island.]

[It leads to a very slow death, so yeah, it's pretty painful.] Mm, you can see why we keep close to water. Most of us, anyway.
showmeanguish: (Is that so?)

There're exceptions. But that's a closely guarded secret, so there's nothing else to say.
showmeanguish: (You expect me to believe that?)

Nope. I'm limited... but if you think you can trick me into staying on land for more than a day, you've got another thing coming.
showmeanguish: (Exactly.)

Sneakier than me? I don't think so.
showmeanguish: (Easily betrays)

I'll believe it when I see it. So far you're pretty tame, compared to all the stories I've heard.

Uh-huh. Should I leave you to catch up on some more beauty sleep, Miss Witch?

[Since dawn isn't due for another couple hours, at least. He can feel the shift of the tide as it starts pulling back from the island--soon, the water level even in here would start to drop off. Which would make retrieving her a little harder, but it was still too cool outside to force her to make that journey.

As callous as he seemed, he didn't want her dying on him, now that he knew how delicate their species was.]

Wouldn't dream of it.

[And with that, he retreats back below the water's surface. For a while, he stays close, until he eventually moves on to finish hunting before the sun comes up.

And in the meantime, she'll be left alone for a few more hours. The water level inside the cave recedes, inch by inch, until it's a few meters below the shelf she's perched on. But more importantly, it also reveals what appears to be a tooled, purposefully manufactured staircase built into the natural rock, that starts just a few feet below Euri's perch. ]

[The stairs continue down well past the surface where the water has receded, fading into the murkier depths of wherever the cave's floor is. Of course, the spell Vanitas had cast on her would grant her the ability to breathe underwater... it's just a matter of whether she's willing to risk it.

She is not, in fact, alone though. Hidden unseen, there's lazy movement deep within the currents, propelling an object slowly along the bottom of the enclosure.]

[It's cold, and dark past the first few feet. The light filtering in from far up in the cave's ceiling only penetrates so far. The water also dissolves the clay on the back of Euri's hand, exposing her wound... But curiously, it's already closed and mostly mended over with a thin scar.

The movement of her swimming, the vibrations it creates... Travelsthrough the depths, and picks up some interest. A large fin flicks, moving the body attached to it further towards the surface.]
showmeanguish: (Around you.)

[It is! Her kidnapper wasn't lying about it lasting for several days, so she's good there.

But her clumsy splashing isn't. And finally, something large propels itself up into the half-gloom, illuminating an expanse of grey scales and fins, along with a wedge-shaped head with a mouth crammed full with teeth.

It's not the Merman. It's a young Mako shark, and it's yellow-ish eye stares at her before it turns, and disappears back into the murkier depths.]

[And of course, all her splashing does is attract it more. She's acting like something panicked, and/or wounded, which is all the incentive it needs to follow after.

Luckily, it can't climb. But it's fin breaks the surface of the water, circling. It's nose and eyes come up, sweeping the area before it dives again.]
