[You can't get something for nothing, you know. Life lesson number one, whelp.]

Not just any black rock.

[It's just a reminder, letting him know he'll be "judging" whatever he brings back. Obsidian is different than just "black rock" after all. But his eyes are back on the smaller drake again, studying him.

The lagoon itself is fairly wide and rather deep, with a bed of plants, sand, stone, and more down at the bottom of its vaguely-conical-shaped bed. Should make for an interesting dive... And there's plenty of fish in there too.

But remember... no touching.]

[ Impossible, he's going to touch everything. Hopefully Riku isn't expecting him not to muck up and around anything he encounters in the water there, because otherwise he's about to be mightily disappointed. Ven's never actually swam before either, so his first foray into the lagoon's probably a little embarrassing to watch.

He takes overly-large steps as he tries to stick mostly to the places where his paws can touch, nosing through reed and vegetation and silt and smoothed rock beneath the water's surface as he starts his search, leaving a ckloud in the water behind him as he goes. ]

[Hey, he's not stupid. He already told the whelp to look and don't touch and the goldscale bitty came back covered in mud and algae. Definitely touching happened. So he's expecting the same overly-energetic behavior below water too. Only bonus is he won't be dredging mud all over the shore.

Until he gets a look at that response. Nosing around the water's shallow areas. It doesn't take him long to lift his head again and peer at the drake with a narrowed gaze, head tilted just enough that his horns are gleaming in the sunlight again.

Suspicion.]

I covered the shore already.

But you pointed to the whole thing... [ And and )8 deep water... ]

...]

You can't swim.

[ Hurk. He freezes up for a second, but pretty quickly his facefins are flapping and his tail smacks against the water. ]

I've just never done it before...!

... [*sigh*] That would mean you can't swim.

It can't be that hard! [ HE CAN TOTALLY DO IT )8 ]

[Don't you dare go make him save your innocent foolish tail...]

How long can you hold your breath?

[ But his tail is adorable. One day it will grow out and be long and pretty D: ]

...I dunno. I've never held it before.

[Of all the dragons to flop into his territory...]

Forget it. [There is no helping this one.] You're on your own for food.

But I can do it...! [ quickest write-off ever, wow ]

[He's not here to babysit.]

You wouldn't even know how to start. [And promptly lifts himself from the stone and shoves. Legs and wings tuck to his body, leaving his entire figure a streamline, serpentine shape as he arches over the shore and plunges into the lagoon like a sword blade.

...crap, what if he followed?]

[ That is exactly what's going to happen, actually. As soon as Riku goes in Ven whines and paces at the deepest point he's able, chuffing anxiously, before he just goes for it and jumps into the water, scraping and clawing at the water rather uselessly for several seconds. At least until he realizes water doesn't work like ground and he can't just walk through it. ]

[He hears the water breaking above him and the sudden clawing at liquid is all he needs to know exactly how unfamiliar this much water is to the goldscale. The silver drake curves under the water and his neck arches to the side to swing his head and glare upwards towards the surface. The fish, at least, scatter like flies.

Nostrils clamped together, maw shut, he could stay underwater for quite some time. But... for now, he'd just circle far below and watch. If Ven's natural instincts kicked in and he dragged himself back to shore, all the better. If not...

Guess he'd have to do something with that sorry butt.]

[ Give him a few floundering moments and a hasty resurface to dogpaddle uselessly through the water. He'll make a few anxious little circles before his paws finally start to work their way through the air with something more akin to actual wading, and once that's done he's going to tilt his head down and look around, trying to spot the silverscale. ]

[Hn. Natural instinct. Least he wasn't going to drown right away. Riku eyes the other for just a few seconds more before he curls himself in another circle and dives further down towards the bottom of the lagoon, using side-to-side motions with his body and tail to swim.

There's a small cove down here too, which he slips into and about-faces, resting on the stony sill for a few moments ~~so he can keep an eye on over-eager up there~~.]

[ Not right away! But he's still...not really getting anywhere like this, and he's not used to the pressure of holding his breath like this so he lifts his head fairly quickly and snorts, nostrils flaring as he paddles quickly back to the shore. Or at least where his feet touch, and from there he'll walk a worried little path back and forth until he decides to toss himself into the deeper end again and try for another foray into the water.

He gets maybe fifteen feet farther before he has to hurry back to the surface. ]

[Well, he's trying; that counts for something. Riku's eyes narrow beneath the water and watches the gold go from head under to paddling back to shore and then another try.

Currents shift as he pushes himself out of the cove, slamming jaws shut and capturing two fish from a school that swam too close in an effort to escape the splashing above.

The next time Ven breaks the surface, water bulges for a moment and then the silver's horns and head appears halfway cross the lagoon, only letting the tips of his nostrils and his eyes peer above the surface. Watching him.]

[ Which of course Ven misses because he's trying to dive again and failing to get very far at all considering how clumsy he is in the water--goldscales aren't made for aquatic living--and every time he comes up, head craned back to stay above water as he stretches to the tips of his paws trying to grope for the soft lake bed below.

If nothing else it probably looks amusing. ]

[Apparently not... Sure, amusing, in an almost painful way. He'll never get far at this rate. The silver drake's annoyed sigh is clear through his eyes and he lifts his head from the water completely, wings and legs moving to keep himself afloat unconsciously.]

Stop floundering. And go back to the shallows.

[ He's a little bit of a failure :c but with practice he'll probably improve to some degree. Today is just not that day though, and he whines piteously as he shuffles quickly back to shore and gets his feet under him again, relieved to be back on land as he shakes his coat out. ]

[Got that right, over-eager. The whine merely bounces off his hide and Riku slides forward through the water, head lowering as he moves to the shallows. Does this mean he's going to have to feed you? Ugh, better not...]

You won't be getting anything like that.

[ he can forage! And catch small game |D but probably muck up a lot of space doing so. ]

Swimming is hard! I don't like not being able to touch the bottom.

[Where? Did someone forget he's not "home" at the moment?]

You always get everything fed straight to your gullet?
